How Much Will It Cost to Build Your Own Social Media App?

The concept of social networking has revolutionized the world. And as technology keeps on updating itself every day, it has become tougher to sustain in the competition. App development has been on the rise like never before. More and more entrepreneurs have sprung up ever ready to launch their social web or mobile applications in the market. Among these talents those that could penetrate deeper have even become overnight billionaires.

Now the question is, what does it take to make your social networking application a hit? And how much needs to be invested to come up with products like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest etc.? However, before you start approaching the best mobile app development company for custom price quotes, you need to be clear on a few mandatory factors. For example, key features, customization, platform on which the app is to be built etc. Here’s how you need to go about:

Identify your target audience – Who do you wish to cater to? Identify your end users and try to understand their needs. Discover the common audience’s frustrations and build something that will appeal on a huge scale. For example, when teens got tired of their parents hanging out and eve’s dropping on their account on Facebook, Snapchat came along that offered the much required anonymity and less public shaming with disappearing messages. Extensive market research and a few direct surveys will do the trick. However, remember it can get a bit overwhelming at times. But don’t worry. You’ll get through.

Consider the right platform – Do you wish to create a web app, mobile app or both? The next question will be is it for iOS or Android users? Your decision will depend on your target market preferences. However, web app requires a bit longer to get developed compared to mobile apps. Also if you are considering two app versions via. cross-platform development, it will still take more time and of course bigger budget. Android apps in a native platform contain 40% more code and take 30% more time to develop compared to iOS. Hire best app developers and other parts of North America work at about $150 per hour and those from India and Eastern Europe charge about $30-50 an hour.

User Experience is important – Your app can only be appealing if it is easy to use and pleasing to the eye. The design and usability should be self-explanatory. With innumerable apps storming the app store, people will stop using your app if it has poor UX. Ask your developer to take care of the structure – wireframing -prototype – and finally add design and usability principles. Start with a well-supported MySQL or PostgresSQL database for structured data. Facebook, Twitter etc. uses it too.

Features of your app – Basic features of the app like easy registration, users being able to add, edit and remove personal data, manage personal information and preferences, one-click invite, contact import, search bar and algorithm around hashtags and random words, selections of new users to connect with, private messaging, newsfeed, multi-language support, posting media content, tools for self-expression, geo tagging and the likes are mandatory.

Time-to-market and cost – The cost of development will definitely vary according to the complexity, platform and features of your app. However, there are two major factors that needs to be determined: hours required and hourly cost. Following are a few cost estimates listed by The Next Web:

  1. Twitter-like app: $50,000 to $250,000
  2. Instagram clone: $100,000 to $300,000
  3. WhatsApp messenger: $125,000 to $150,000
  4. Pinterest: around $120,000
  5. Snapchat: $75,000 – $150,000
  6. Vine: $125,000 and $175,000

When it comes to time, it may take around 2-4 months to build the MVP for your social media app. Most development companies normally charge around $15,000 – $20,000. That being said, here is another estimate of the time required for building a social network app:

  1. Android: 500 hours approx.
  2. iOS: 400 hours approx.
  3. Back end: 500 hours approx.
  4. UX/UI: 200 hours approx.
  5. QA: 230 hours approx.
  6. PM: 150 hours approx.
  7. Total time: 1400 hours approx. for one platform

For native application it normally requires 10 weeks for back-end and 8 weeks for the front-end development. However, not all apps require backend and use it only to cut down on the development time and related complexities.

As an aspiring entrepreneur, you would want to create a demand in the market and build something totally out-of-the-box to fulfill that demand. This is probably what the next Mark Zuckerberg would do. But, plan your decisions only after active market research of your idea, its requirements and budget.

For any Client it’s very important to know how much an app will cost in terms of development and designing. Always trust Best App Development Company for your app development

How To Quickly Get Started As An Affiliate Marketer

If you want to become an affiliate marketer, you have to get started on the right foot. Here’s a quick and easy guide for getting started in affiliate marketing.

Choose the Right Niche

If you want to make it easier, it’s best to choose a niche that you already know a lot about as a customer yourself. If you’re part of the audience, it’s going to make it easier to become an expert, find the right products, and share your experiences in a way that is engaging for your audience.

Know Your Audience

If you’re part of your audience, you’ll know them to a point, but remember that your own experience is subjective. Get to know your audience by joining their groups, following the leaders they follow, and engaging with them on a personal level as you build your business.

Offer Your Audience What They Need and Want

The easiest way to sell things to your audience is to put in front of them what they need and want. Find these products, and you won’t have to do much selling. You’ll just need to be able to explain why they need it and want it.

Deliver Excellent Value within Your Content

All the content you create for your audience should be valuable on its own, whether it’s free or paid. When you create and promote content that is useful, your audience will grow to trust you and value your opinion more than if everything you do is for sale. The more information you provide, the more they’ll trust you and buy from your recommendations.

Work with Reputable Affiliate Networks

When you first get started, it’s hard to know what is reputable or not. But in general, the bigger networks are trustworthy even though sometimes less than trustworthy sellers and creators try to use their systems at times. That’s why you should also try to get to know the creator too. Networks like ClickBank.com, JVZoo.com, E-junkie.com are typically well received and will kick off scammers when caught.

Use a Multi-Channel Marketing Approach

Once you get started producing content to market the products you choose, you’ll want to use a marketing approach that consists of using many channels such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, paid ads, free content and more. Start with one and perfect it, then move to the next so that you can build. But, start with creating an email list by choosing the right autoresponder that allows affiliate marketing.

Be Consistent

The most important aspect you have left is consistency. Set a plan, understand all the reasons for your plan, and then stick to it. It takes time to make money as an affiliate marketer. At first, you’ll feel as if you’re speaking to a void. But as your audience builds, the people who consume your content become more in number. As you become more trusted and popular, a snowball effect will happen and it’ll seem as if you’re experiencing “overnight” success.

Companies are happy to pay commissions to people just like you, in return for selling their products and services. You have the potential to make a great income when you choose the right niche, stay committed, and understand your audience. Different Ways Of Generating Traffic, Leads And Sales For Your Affiliate Or Own Offers

When it comes to running an offline or online businesses, the most critical things owners need – besides the necessary licence and equipment – are traffic, leads and sales. Yet in spite of knowing this, the underlying question in most of their minds – is how to get more while spending less or better still, for free?

Having said that, this is what my article going to address today.

Now regardless of what they are called, they still boil down to one common factor which is people. Because without them taking action the way you want be it seeing your offer, listening to and reading what you presented and taking up your free and paid offer, your business is not going to last. That is the brutal truth in traditional and internet marketing as well.

So the question is how do I get traffic?

To be honest, there is no right and wrong answer. But there are free and paid methods you can use.

However before even doing so, it is important to identify if there is a market for your offer and connecting with people within that. This is absolutely necessary in order to build an audience as in groups of people who know, like and trust you. Especially when you focused on free methods which I touched upon later.

It is the same way with how you got to know your friends, boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse and how politicians do to get more people to vote for them and formed the government. You might also see that in networking events and seminars.

Below are both free and paid strategies I know and learnt from more experienced marketers.

A. Free

1. Article Marketing

This is by far the oldest but still workable method. What you do is write and submit an article like what you see now into relevant sites like Ezine Articles.

2. Blogging

This is more of a long-term SEO and wealth building strategy.

You can write whatever you want in your blog – preferably WordPress into your own domain and hosting and then connect with other bloggers in your niche either through blog commenting or guest posting.

3. Classified Advertising

You might not believe this but this is how I got started making my first dollar in 2008.

This is a great alternative and test to paid ads.

What you need to do is to come up with a eye-catching headline and 2-3 lines ad with links before posting to relevant sites like Craiglist and Gumtree.

4. Directory Submissions

In the past this used to work very well.

But in the wake of Google’s relentless updates, many sites have come and go so apart from Dmoz, they are no longer variable today.

5. Email Marketing

This works provided you have a quality email list of subscribers who are eager to read from, trust and buy from you.

But for this to work effectively, you need a high converting landing page and reliable autoresponder to send unlimited emails.

6. Forum Posting

Forums are online discussion sites in which people congregrated and discussed about common issues and interests.

To get started, there are important rules you have to abide by in order not to get banned.

Such as do not spam but provide helpful information in answering what they need and want to know with your blog and landing page links in your signautre – which is the footer text below every post you make

7. Google SEO

If you provided good quality content in your blog in the form of articles and even videos with social media channel links – I will be talking about later, the major search engine will reward you with higher rankings on first page for maximum exposure and even leads and sales from your searchers.

This also helps if you have comments and questions below your posts.

8. PDF Submissions

You can also compile a set of 5-10 articles into MS Word or Open Office into a report or e-book with an attractive cover before publishing in sites like Calameo, Scribd and Slideshare.

9. Press Releases

They are basically online versions of newspaper reports in which you can submit to related sites.

There are both free and paid services in which you can submit.

10. Social Media And Networks

You can also participate in social networks like Facebook where you can post on your timeline, create fanpages, live events, videos and joined and share in groups like what you do in forums.

Others include LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest and Tumblr.

11. Video Marketing

This is where you create your videos from your own PC or iPhone camera, powerpoint slides or both with some music background and introduction or highlighted points text.

If you just want to show your face, you can use camera.

But if you want to share your PC screen, I will recommend Jing and Camtasia Studio – the latter gives you a free 30 day trial before you pay a one-time fee of $197.

12.. Web 2.0 Properties.

You can also post your content in other blogging platforms like Blogger, Hubpages, Webs, Weebly and Wix.

In the past these used to work like a charm in the form of Google Wonder Wheel.

But now you can only posted what you had not in your articles and blog posts.

This works best when you are doing e-commerce and your info products.

13. Webinars

They are online versions of seminars in which you can invite your subscribers and customers to attend before presenting your offer.

For this, I recommend Go-To-Webinar and Zoom.

B. Paid

For paid strategies, I will recommend 3 platorms in Bing, Facebook And Google Ads. At the time of writing this, mobile apps and YouTube Ads also came about.

With that said, these are both free and paid methods I know of getting traffic, leads and sales for your sites.

Why We Are Using Tera-Bytes of Information to Sell a Product On The Internet

The first personal computers were introduced to the public in 1975. These computers were sold as kits. The first one of theses personal computers was the MITS Altair 8800 and was followed by the IMSAI 8080. Theses computers both used the Intel 8080 microprocessor. They were limited in memory, no hard drive and no networking capabilities. Of course there was no internet at that time. The internet didn’t become available to the general public until the mid 1990s.

Today most people own a personal computer in the form of a lap top. All these devices have a hard drive with capacities measured in tera-bytes (tera-bytes mean in the trillions). Their screens are LCD and allow use to see videos in the highest of resolution and most are now touch screen. These computer all are able to connect to internet wirelessly just about anywhere in the world, and often for free. Just visit any coffee shop or fast food place and this will nearly always be possible. There are an estimated 2 billion computers in the world and many of these are of the laptop variety. Thats is a lot potential internet connections if you consider all the smart phones that are being used to connect to social media.

Computer technology has come a long way. Today we have the internet everywhere. Our cell phones and televisions are called smart devices, as we can use them to access the internet wirelessly. We can basically use our smart phones to access the internet anywhere in the world. It is estimated that in 2018 there were 1.56 billion smart phones sold in the world. In 2007 there were only 122 million sold. My how the world has changed. Ever notice how everybody you see walking on the street are staring into one of these devices?

All the communications we do on these devices is done in high-speed. Using these devices to surf the web is like turning pages in a book. So why not find a way to make money with this technology knowing that so many people are spending a large portion of their day reading email and searching the internet. This is what has happen. Business people are using the internet to sell their products and ideas on the internet.

One method of making money online is called affiliate marketing. This type of marketing has become very popular since the advent of the high-speed internet. The development of high-speed internet is one of the cornerstones when it comes to making money on the internet. This is because of the vast number of people who have access to various computer devices with access to high-speed internet.

To become an affiliate marketer you will need a high-speed internet connection and some type od smart device, such as a cell phone or laptop computer. You will have to create a website or blog that readers will become engaged in. Of course you will have to monetized your website by teaming up with companies and sell their products or information and receive a commission.

Best Regards

Launch Your Business and Sell Your Products On The Best E-Commerce Platform Today

Undoubtedly the best E-commerce platform today, Shopify is a Canadian E-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa and created by, like many other companies, people who sought out for something, didn’t get it and decided to make it and avail it to the public.

Shopify has had rapid growth through the years and their purchasing of resources, or better yet other small business brands to further build the company is impressive. What’s more impressive is their easy-to-remember slogan: “Whether you sell, on social media, in store or out of the trunk of your car, Shopify has you covered”. A better version is: “Shopify, the best place to sell online, in person, and anywhere in-between”.

Shopify doesn’t leave you hanging either. The platform hosts a Podcast and avails several resources to business owners in the form of blog posts. In fact, you could be an affiliate, investor or someone whom just follows the platform and they wouldn’t let you down.

You’re new to business and the platform in general? You get posts to help you get your first sale. You’re an affiliate? You get the resources you need to help you better understand and promote the platform. You’re a professional Entrepreneur with lots of experience? Believe it, Shopify has you covered.

But a platform as this does have its drawbacks, especially since the evident rise of drop shipping in 2015 where it became saturated with people thinking that outsourcing products from AliExpress was a good idea (even though drop shipping has been here since people thought of selling stuff to other people) and everyone who failed labeled it a “Get rich quick” scheme, even though Shopify has never publicly, or privately insinuated that using their platform assures/insures success.

WHY SHOPIFY?

There are a lot of attributes that make Shopify a sexy platform; particularly that it can be customized according to ones wishes. They are listed below;

• User friendly interface.

• Plans catering to your needs.

• World class customer support.

• Easy customization.

• A blog for your store.

• Access to Shopify experts that’ll help with your store at a negotiable cost.

• An app store with apps to help you manage your store and many more.

SHOPIFY PLANS

Shopify has plans with features that fits every criteria one may garner. There are generally five shopify plans with specific features available for them. The plans and respective features are discussed below;

THE LITE SHOPIFY PLAN

If you have a Facebook page about a particular activity or service and you have products you could sell on your page, then this is the plan for you. It is limited to only selling on Facebook and costs $9.

THE BASIC SHOPIFY PLAN

This plan costs $29 and has cards rates of: 2.9%+30¢ for Canadian cards, 3.5%+30¢ for Amex or international cards and an in- person card rate of 2.7%+0¢. There are no transaction fees for using Shopify payments as your payment gateway, but using external payment gateways has a transaction fee of 2.0% percent.

With this plan you get these features: two (2) staff accounts, ability to add an unlimited number of products, an unlimited amount of file storage space, a $49 retail package, a “good” Shopify shipping discount, shipping labels printed, 24/7 hour support, fraud analysis, the ability to create orders manually, discount codes, a website and a blog and finally a free SSL certificate. Features you do not get on this plan are: gift cards, professional reports, advanced cart recovery, advanced report builder nor third-party calculated rates.

THE SHOPIFY PLAN

This plan costs $79 and has cards rates of: 2.7%+30¢ for Canadian cards, 3.4%+30¢ for Amex or international cards and an in- person card rate of 2.6%+0¢. There are no transaction fees for using Shopify payments as your payment gateway, but using external payment gateways has a transaction fee of 1.0% percent.

With this plan you get these features: five (5) staff accounts, ability to add an unlimited number of products, an unlimited amount of file storage space, a $49 retail package, a “better” Shopify shipping discount (than the basic plan), shipping labels printed, 24/7 hour support, fraud analysis, the ability to create orders manually, discount codes, a website and a blog, a free SSL certificate, gift cards, professional reports and advanced cart recovery. Features you do not get on this plan are: advanced report builder and third-party calculated rates.

THE ADVANCED SHOPIFY PLAN

This plan costs $299 with cards rates of: 2.4%+30¢ for Canadian cards, 3.3%+30¢ for Amex or international cards and an in- person card rate of 2.4%+0¢. There are no transaction fees (, as usual) for using Shopify payments as your payment gateway, but using external payment gateways has a transaction fee of 0.5% percent.

On this plan, every feature is made available to you. Specifically, fifteen (15) staff accounts, ability to add an unlimited number of products, an unlimited amount of file storage space, a $49 retail package, the “best” Shopify shipping discount, printed shipping labels, 24/7 hour support, fraud analysis, the ability to create orders manually, discount codes, a website and a blog, free SSL certificate, gift cards, professional reports, advanced cart recovery, advanced report builder and third-party calculated rates.

THE SHOPIFY PLUS PLAN

Shopify plus plan is Shopify’s “custom” plan. There is barely any information of this plan except that you get what you agree on with Shopify. If a business gets intereste in the plan, they contact an affiliate or some affiliate brands of Shopify and they will submit/refer you to Shopify. After which Shopify will call you and create a store for you based on your agreed criteria.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH SHOPIFY

My personal journey with Shopify has been very interesting. In my first week of opening my first two stores, I’ve had several abandoned carts. Why so many abandoned carts? You ask! Because living in a third world country, Nigeria, I couldn’t get a payment processor. All good options required that a business be registered (Until recently but only for new accounts). It’s sad. So if you fail, it’s always easier to blame it on your country rather than the platform. It’s like back lashing at Google because they didn’t have results for a weird name/word you were searching for.

My first store sold geek merchandise and the second store that I still work on, sells Long Boards. I still can’t get a payment processor and so have a vast amount of abandoned carts while I simultaneously try to make it look appealing and trustworthy. I haven’t given up!

So, I saved the best for last. Shopify allows a 14 day free trial after which you’ll need to buy a plan to keep using the platform unless a development store is created for you. There is still no loophole because once a store is 14 days old; you’ll need to still buy a plan regardless of if it was created as a development store. The only other option is for you to be added as an employee and when the store makes 50 orders, you’ll need to buy a plan and the store gets handed to you. You also have the opportunity to employ Shopify Experts to help you with your store based on what you agreed on.

If you have a product, whether you made it or had it made for you and would like or are ready Launch, then there is no better platform to sell on than Shopify.

Your 2019 Guide on How to Use Video in Email Marketing

It’s not news that video is at the forefront of marketing these days.

From creating videos for your website to hosting Facebook Live sessions, this marketing tool has transformed from a nice-to-have to a must-have if you want to effectively engage with your audience and build a loyal following who will be more apt to purchase from you.

Video-based marketing is a great way to stand out from the multiple messages people get in their inboxes every day, not to mention how effective it is on social media.

This article focuses on using video in your email marketing. Keep reading for the technical parts of utilizing video in your email marketing and the creative aspect for some inspiration.

I’ve talked about using video many times in the past, but in case you’re still not convinced or didn’t think to use video in your email marketing efforts, it’s time to pay close attention. According to a study done by SuperOffice, including video in emails led to open rate increases of six percent (the average open rate across industries is about 25 percent).

Some other benefits of video marketing:

• It saves time. You can create short, engaging pieces of video much more quickly than it will take you to write an 800-word blog. It also gives info to your viewer in an easy-to-understand way.

• It can help SEO. Your Google search ranking can improve if your footage is viewed and shared by enough people.

• It’s cost-effective. You don’t need CGI effects or animation to make something great. A video can be much more affordable to produce than a blog or ad.

• It grabs attention. Especially when added into your newsletter, a video captures your audience’s attention and compels them to want to watch.

First, the Technical Part of Video Email Marketing

Before you start brainstorming ways to use video in email, you need to know how it plays in different email clients.

There are over 30 major email clients, including Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail and Yahoo Mail, and some of them don’t support the requirements for using email with video.

Traditionally, marketers would use HTML5 (Hypertext Markup Language) to code HTML video directly into an email, but recipients with certain email clients aren’t able to play it. Many popular email providers will only show a fallback image, and your marketing message will be lost in the crowd.

Fortunately, some of the popular services like MailChimp, Constant Contact and AWeber make it easy to share across all providers by using a screen capture image of your video and linking it to your original content on your blog, YouTube, Vimeo or similar sites.

This gives the appearance there’s actually video in your email and avoids technical issues with your email provider.

Instead of having to learn HTML5, there are also 3rd party services that can create a video snippet for you to include right in the body of your newsletter. In fact, I did this in a recent newsletter of ours!

Check out Playable to embed a short video in your next newsletter. Playable will replace the video with an image of your choice if the email service provider doesn’t support the video technology.

>> Learn more about the features of our favourite email providers.

No matter what eNewsletter tool you use, it’s crucial to test your campaign before you send it out. You’ll need to have accounts on all of the popular email platforms so that you can see how your footage works in each of them.

Sound like a lot of work? Trust a professional marketing company that’s been helping clients create successful eNewsletter campaigns since 2003.

Next, Make Sure You’re Mobile

According to Hubspot, mobile opens accounted for 46 percent of all email opens. That means you have to ensure you’re keeping smartphones in mind when you’re email marketing with video.

Fortunately, eNewsletter providers such as MailChimp and Constant Contact let you test and see how your messaging will look before you send it out.

It’s still important to keep the file size as low as possible so the video doesn’t need to buffer to start playing. Mobile devices don’t have the fastest download speed.

A good tip is to take a 10 second snippet of your video to use in the newsletter. That snippet can then link to the full feature on your blog.

Also, always make sure autoplay is off, especially on mobile. Most people don’t appreciate having something start playing (often noisily) as they sit in the office or on a bus; they prefer to click on Play themselves.

Now, On to the Creative Part

With the technical stuff out of the way, let’s look at how you can actually create content that will engage your viewers and get you more visitors to your website.

You need a plan with clear objectives or else you’re just sending content out into the world and hoping it will be seen and loved.

Why are you creating this campaign? To generate leads, brand awareness, followers… ?

Once you’ve identified your objectives and goals, you can start thinking about actual email, and the content you want to produce.

As mentioned, host the full-length video in a blog post, landing page or even on social media and then plan to incorporate a “sneak peak” of that video in your email marketing campaign, linking to the full-length version.

Here are six tips and inspiration to get you started:

1. Use the word “video” in your subject line to make your message stands out.

2. Promote an event. Let’s use a law office as an example. We created a short video using Wave.Video for one our clients, A Family Law Firm, to promote an upcoming seminar they were hosting.

3. Offer tips. When it comes to email marketing with video, users want short, digestible clips. A “Top 5” or “4 ways to improve” will get more attention than a 2-minute creation of you trying to explain a product.

4. Create a series. This is a great way to keep people engaged with your expertise, as long as what you’re providing is valuable to them. Stay away from a five-part series on your latest offering. Instead, solve a problem.

Using the law firm video marketing again as an example, you could set up a list-building campaign and do a four-part video series on ways to prepare for a separation or divorce:

• Part 1: DIY or hire a lawyer?

• Part 2: Filing the necessary paperwork

• Part 3: Dividing assets

• Part 4: Supporting your children

5. Make tutorials. Your product or service solves a problem, so how can you showcase this to your clients? Educate your viewers with a short explanation around how your product or service will improve their lives, using real-world examples.

6. Think outside the box. Now, we don’t all have the budget outdoor company Patagonia does; however, look at how they’ve integrated amazing footage into their email campaigns. It doesn’t focus on their surfing gear, but it’s relevant to their customers.

Whether you’re a life coach shooting some footage while you’re on vacation or a wellness provider offering viewers a glimpse of your dinner prep process, get creative and get shooting!

Email marketing with video can be incredibly powerful, increasing your open rates, engagement, leads and sales substantially.

However, not every email should contain one. If you start using this marketing tactic every time you send out an eNewsletter to your subscribers, they’ll stop paying attention. Think of it as one way to stand out from the crowd, but don’t neglect your other tactics.

Crafting an eNewsletter campaign with video (or without), choosing the right email provider, testing and monitoring open rates and engagement is a tough job. And, it needs to be done well or else you’ll end up alienating and losing subscribers.

Are You Struggling at Work? Here Are Three Ideas to Help You Improve Your Situation.

Work is big deal, it is very serious for most people. As important as work is many people are unhappy at work. Entrepreneurship or as they call it “side hustle” is a better yet not seemingly easily attainable solution for most people.

I can count 200 reasons why happiness at work is important but for now let me give you just three reasons

Reason (I) you spend most of your life at work. Most people are at work for at least 10 hours a week – for many that might mean getting up at 6 am, getting ready for work, leaving home at 7am and getting stuck in traffic before you get to work at 8am.

So, if you spend 8 hours at work or 9 hours you probably spend more time with your colleagues than you do with your family. Just think about it, 8 hours every day with your supervisor every single day of the week translates to 40 hours a week with your supervisor and co-workers as opposed to the 16 hours you spend with family on weekends

Reason (II) Work brings in the cash, who said money was not important? Money is very important… we can’t easily live without it. We need to cloth ourselves, we need food, we need shelter, we need or even want a good holiday every once in a while. More money is needed if you have children and a family to take care of. Money is so important the absence of it can raise havoc to our happiness and wellbeing. I am not saying we should worship money but I am saying that it is important

Reason (III) Work is important for your happiness, if you are not happy at work and constantly have work problems it is easy for those problems to creep into other areas in your life including your relationship with your family, husband or wife and everything else.

So, work is a big deal!!

You might be asking yourself, where am I going with this?

Research shows that as important as work is, most people are not happy at work. According to Forbes, 70% of people in the workplace are disengaged.

Why are people sometimes not happy at work? In general, there are three common work problems that most people have, maybe you are facing one of them, either (I) you don’t like the work (II) you don’t like the boss or people that you work with or (III) you are not growing or are not recognised enough (not enough pay, no promotion etc.).

I have learnt in my life from working and coaching many people that most work problems can get solved by just doing three things right. Just three things.

(I) Being strong

Back in the days I used to work for a company where there was a staff kitchen cleaner. Most staff members would arrive at work in the morning and go on with their routine, make a cup of tea, eat some breakfast cereals… make another cup of tea later on and so on.

Not many staff members ever said thank you for the great job that the kitchen lady did. But whenever she happened to take time off or was off sick everybody moaned about how dirty the kitchen looked as they couldn’t find clean cups and things got scattered all over the place. So the work that the helper in the kitchen was very important but nobody ever noticed until she was not there. How many people are like that in our lives that we take for granted. Your work is important trust me just know that even if you feel unappreciated.

Some of us live in complexes, we have security control at the gates, and they open the gate each day with us going on in with our business and ensure that we are protected. We may not always say thank you for their effort but when the gate is not opened get upset about the situation.

I am trying to remind you that your work is important, every work is important, from the floor cleaner right up to the CEO. So in whatever it is that you do understand that your work is important because that is fundamental for you taking an interest in it which will allow you to be strong about the circumstance that you face and give you better ability to remain strong and positive.

(II) Knowing more

Secondly, know more about the business that you work for. Even if you are a floor worker at Pick n Pay or Shoprite or Woolworths or furniture shop it would help to know what your company does, how it makes money and what is important to the business. Can you imagine a floor worker at Pick N Pay that knows all the company board members names, how much profit the company made, how many stores it has in South Africa. Do you think this person can remain a floor worker for long with that much knowledge and awareness? I would live you to answer that question.

Knowing more about the business you are involved in helps you become relevant and become useful in ways that you can’t even imagine. Before you know it you would become a valuable asset to your organisation and progress better in your company. What is excellent about knowing more is that even if you do not grow within your company you would always impress looking for work elsewhere because you will go to interviews informed and with the right level of thinking and self-confidence.

It is easy when you are not happy at work to get disengaged get passive. The problem with that is that nothing changes for you from your work environment because you are doing nothing. Instead of doing nothing I would like to advise you to know more. Whatever you do as a job, whatever business you are involved in, just know more about it. Knowing more leads to powerful change that is why some people who have worked for security companies or restaurants started their own firms doing the same thing. When you know more suddenly the boss has no unreasonable power over you. You get better positioned to change things, to reason and to influence things.

(II) Be initiative

Knowing more does not help if you do not take initiative and do more. What do I mean by doing more? I mean understand the needs of the business people around you, you supervisor, your company and proactively work hard towards meeting them. Do not just go about your daily routine, try to understand what your boss and your company values. Ask questions to your boss, what are the two important things that I can help you with right now? Then go ahead and help with that, then ask after you do whatever it is that is required, “is there anything more that I can do to help?” Being of service is important and it will help you become valuable. You will outperform many other people on your job. Your value will increase and your bank account will show that.

Being initiative is not just about working your job. When you implement the second advice that I gave i.e. knowing more about your business, being initiative can move you to a place where you are not just a restaurant worker and become a restaurant owner. You can get to a place where you are not jus a security worker but a security company owner.
